Our Kashmiri embroidery or Kashida is an artwork originated during the Mughal period. The term Kashida is derived from “Kashidakari” meaning “needle work”. The craft has been known to be introduced into the Kashmir valley by Sufi saints from Persia and spread across the region and has now become a staple art of the region.
The embroidery work is often colorful and inspired by the region’s natural beauty. The aari embroidery is a form of embroidery done using a sharp-edged needle called an “Aari”. The origin of aari embroidery is traced back to the 12th century, first developed in Gujarat.
The introduction of machine weaving in the 20th century has posed a significant impact on the livelihood of skilled artisans and declined the presence of art forms. However, efforts like kani weaving were implemented in the early 21st century to revive the craft and improve the economic status of artisans.
